An outbreak of Marburg virus disease (Marburg) occurred in Tanzania from January- March 2025. This outbreak resulted in ten deaths.

Outbreak investigation summary

On January 14, the WHO issued a notice of a Marburg outbreak in the Kagera region in northwest Tanzania. Two confirmed cases, eight probable cases, and 104 cumulative suspect cases were reported. All ten confirmed and probable cases died, including eight who died before the confirmation of the outbreak. The outbreak was declared over on March 13 following the standard 42 days, or two incubation periods, since the last confirmed case was reported.

No cases of Marburg were reported in the United States during this outbreak.

CDC has a longstanding presence in Tanzania, having established an office there in 2001. CDC Tanzania works closely with the Government of Tanzania and partner organizations to detect, prevent, and control infectious disease outbreaks and build and strengthen the country's core public health capabilities.

During this outbreak, CDC provided technical assistance to the Ministry of Health, assessing outbreak conditions, engaging with regional health authorities, providing technical input on surveillance protocols, assessing treatment units, and participating in cross-border meetings.

CDC and in-country partners across Africa work together on disease strengthening surveillance, laboratory capacity, strengthening workforce capacity, case investigation, case management, infection prevention and control, border health systems, and planning.
