Deron Burton, MD, JD, MPH (CAPT, USPHS), serves as the Director of the Division of TB Elimination (DTBE), NCHHSTP

Role at CDC

Dr. Burton has held a variety of leadership roles during his 20-year CDC career. He served as Acting Center Director as well as Director of the Division of Blood Disorders and Public Health Genomics in CDC's National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, Deputy Director of NCHHSTP, Lead of the Methodology and Analysis Team in the Division of Tuberculosis Elimination's (DTBE) Clinical Research Branch; and as the Technical Lead for Childhood TB in DTBE's former International Research and Programs Branch.

Dr. Burton has also worked overseas as head of International Emerging Infections Program activities in western Kenya and has served as a special advisor for infectious diseases to the CDC Director. Dr. Burton joined CDC as an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer in 2004 in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases' Respiratory Disease Branch.

Dr. Burton is board certified in preventive medicine, having completed CDC's Preventive Medicine Residency Program assigned to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Dr. Burton received his medical doctorate from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 2003, a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2002, and his Juris Doctor degree from UCLA School of Law in 1995.
