Jeff Zirger, PhD

Jeff Zirger, PhD has served as the lead for the Information Collection Review Office (ICRO) in the Office of Public Health Ethics and Regulations (OPHER), a position he has held since 2019.

Role at CDC

Jeff Zirger is responsible for planning, managing, and evaluating the programs within OPHER. He works to ensure CDC science and research activities comply with scientific regulatory and ethical practices.

Previous experience

Jeff Zirger, PhD has served as the lead for the Information Collection Review Office (ICRO) in the Office of Public Health Ethics and Regulations (OPHER), a position he has held since 2019. ICRO is tasked with assisting CDC Programs in navigating the OMB/PRA Clearance process, and acts as a liaison between CDC and its federal partners in Washington D.C. (HHS and OMB) for the timely approval of data collection activities.

Before assuming the role ICRO Lead, Jeff served as a Desk Officer/Reviewer in ICRO. Jeff began his career in public service at CDC as a Microbiologist/Investigator with the Division of Select Agents and Toxins (DSAT) in 2012, where he worked to inspect laboratories using Select Agents and Toxins to ensure safety and compliance with federal regulations. Prior to his time at CDC, Jeff worked at Microgame, Inc. (now Werfen), a biotechnology/medical device company in the field of transfusion diagnostics where he developed a number of Elisa-based assays for commercial use.

Education

Jeff completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA where he spent time working in the fields of virology and gene therapy. He received his B.S. in Biology/Chemistry from Bowling Green State University, and his Ph.D. in Immunology/Neuropharmacology from The Ohio State University.
