CDC uses some common data systems, like from emergency departments, to monitor well-known diseases, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV. However, these systems may not always be ideal to track other common but less recognized bacteria or viral diseases.

There are four types of human parainfluenza viruses (HPIV-1 through 4), and the symptoms and spread for each HPIV type can sometimes vary. Respiratory Conditions Treated in the Emergency Department

CDC monitors emergency department data to track trends not only in specific diseases, like COVID-19, but also for respiratory conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis. These conditions can be caused by various respiratory germs, which are not always identified or diagnosed during emergency department visits. Tracking these conditions helps CDC understand how respiratory illnesses affect people and how they may be connected to specific viruses or bacteria.

For example, this monitoring helps determine whether increases in pneumonia are related to an increase in diagnoses for a specific respiratory disease (e.g., flu, RSV, or Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection).

Types of respiratory tract infections:
Upper respiratory tract infections usually involve the nose, sinuses, and throat. Lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia primarily affect the lungs.

  • The International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) discharge diagnostic codes listed in the Acute Respiratory Index (ARI) were used as a starting point to create the list of the respiratory conditions.     • These codes were then further refined to exclude pathogen specific codes and when appropriate were grouped using ICD-10-CM parent codes and Clinical Classifications Software Refined (CCSRs) categories, which grouped ICD-10 CM codes into 14 clinically meaningful categories. See table below.
    • Short codes listed capture all codes underneath (for example, J09 captures J09.X1-J09.X9).
    • Findings for each of the 14 condition categories were analyzed by age group. Select conditions were included in age-specific visualizations on this site. All findings are available at data.cdc.gov.
