Marriage and divorce
State vital records offices report data about marriages to the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS). Most states also report divorce data to NVSS.
Life expectancy
Life expectancy is the average number of years a person who has reached a given age can expect to live. Experts at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) calculate U.S. life expectancy each year using NVSS death data.
NCHS experts estimate life expectancy for each state using life tables they develop from NVSS data. Each NCHS life tables report features several maps. These include maps of state-level life expectancy at birth and changes in life expectancy from the previous year.
