Data sources

Unless stated otherwise, Stats of the States features 2023 data. All 2023 data are final.

The CDC WONDER Online Database is the source of the 2023 National Vital Statistics System birth and death data featured in Stats of the States. This includes data about leading causes of death, firearm mortality, homicide, drug overdose mortality, and infant mortality.

Where ranked, states are categorized from highest rate to lowest rate. Mortality rankings and rates are based on 2023 age-adjusted death rates.

Although adjusted for variations in age-distribution and population size, differences by state do not take into account other state specific population characteristics that may affect birth characteristics or death rates.

When the number of births or deaths is small, differences by state may be unreliable due to instability in rates. When the number of deaths is small, rankings by state may be unreliable due to instability in death rates.

The National Center for Health Statistics publishes annual tables that are the source for marriage and divorce data featured in Stats of the States.

  1. Death rates are age-adjusted. Refer to Age Standardization of Death Rates: Implementation of the Year 2000 Standard for more detail.
  2. Stats of the Stats does not display rates if the calculated rate does not meet National Center for Health Statistics standards for data reliability.
